The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

Posted on February 22, 2012 in Appeasement

abdurmalik posted a photo: The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich , written by William L. Shirer , is a monumental tome, a book that bristles with energy and crisp detail. It is a fine marriage of journalism and scholarship and benefits from the author's extensive years of first hand reporting from Germany during many of the critical events of the war and the buildup to the war. The author made as exhaustive a survey as humanly possible of the massive number of Nazi documents recovered after the war—indeed, few regimes have been as fastidious at documentation as the Third Reich—including many unofficial documents such as the personal diaries of many of the key players. He also was present during the trials of Nuremberg and got to visit and speak with many of the Nazi defendants. First off, this is a massive book. The print edition is 1,264 pages long, which made for over 57 hours of listening. Second, this book is what is says it is: a narrative about the rise and fall of the Third Reich . This is not a comprehensive history of WWII—indeed, the Japanese are only mentioned briefly during the diplomatic maneuvering that laid the foundation for Operation Barbarossa —Hitler's invasion of Russia—and Pearl Harbor is mentioned in passing. In fact, the reader has to venture 7/10ths of the way through the book before it begins to chronicle that fateful day, September 1, 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland and the human race began numbering its world wars. Hitler's rise to power and his near conquest of the European continent is a mesmerizing tale. The author does not hesitate to give his opinion of how contemptible he finds the Führer and his cohorts, but he does recognize that Hitler was a genius, a devious political mastermind of nearly unparalleled ability, a master orator, and, initially, an able military commander. Shirer does an amazing job taking his readers through Hitler's early years, his service in the German army during WWI, his vagabond days, and his joining the Nazi party (Hitler was the 7th or 8th member of the group). He also helps his readers appreciate the historic backdrop that allowed Hitler and his radical agenda to flourish. The maligned and ineffectual Weimar Republic , the lack of political cohesion, the floundering economy, and the national indignation over the "ignominy" of the Treaty of Versailles Shirer is also unflinching in his condemnatory indictment of the victorious Allies and practically charges them with criminal neglect in their wanton failure to check Hitler's rise to power. Hitler, the author argues time and time again, could have been stopped in utero , but the Allies allowed Germany to gestate that monster until he breached the womb and became a threat to the entire continent of Europe. He practically makes mincemeat of Chamberlain, Britain's prime minister, who is charged with appeasement at all costs. The French fare little better. I found it remarkable that Hitler achieved nearly all of his early success without firing a single bullet. Hitler defied Versailles by beginning a massive rearmament program, he chased the French out of the Rhineland , he deftly maneuvered events to take control of Austria, the Sudetenland , and with it Czechoslovakia. Only when the Nazi Führer began making overt designs on Poland did Chamberlain and the western powers finally wake up. Hitler feared repeating history by having to fight a two-front war. The wild card in any pan-European conflict was Russia and, in a shrewd diplomatic coup, he managed to outflank the Allies in the pursuit of an "understanding" with Stalin's Soviet Union. When he and Stalin agreed to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact —the infamous non-aggression treaty—the countdown to WWII began. Shirer chronicles the early successes of the massive German military machine with its mechanized panzer units and the dreaded Luftwaffe, the German air force. The Blitzkrieg wrought havoc across Poland and the world was stunned when the country collapsed in a matter of weeks. France fell in a pathetically short time as well. Hitler initially had success in his bombing campaigns of London and but for an ill-fated change in tactics, might have been able to press his early aerial victories into total success against the British. However, Britain rallied and the Royal Air Force held its own against the Luftwaffe. As Churchill famously remarked regarding those British pilots: "Never has so much been owed by so many to so few." Unable to bomb the British into submission, and equally unable to mount an invasion of the island superpower—the last successful amphibious invasion of Britain in the face of hostile fire was performed by Julius Caesar—Hitler began scheming to invade Russia and crush that nation out of existence. He knew the British were counting on Russia entering the war on its side at some point and he thought that if Russia were destroyed then the Reich and Britain would come to an agreement which would leave him in control of the continent and Britain in control of her global empire. "Never invade Russia in the winter," goes the old adage. And indeed, the Nazi generals were very mindful of the window of opportunity they had to mount a successful offensive there. However, the most fateful event of the war took place: a rebellion in Yugoslavia that Hitler took as a personal offense. He flew into one of his infamous manic rages and ordered the bombing and destruction of the capital. He squandered critical springtime weeks crushing that small Balkan state and it came back to bite his forces in the rear when they finally launched Operation Barbarossa. The Germans simply ran out of time before the bitter and bleak Russian winter began to decimate their forces. From that point, Hitler lost the initiative never to regain it. And the rest, as they say, is history... This review is already too long. So, I'll stop here. The rest of the book chronicles in riveting detail the long arc downwards for the Reich that was to last for 1,000 years: the intrigues, the assassination attempts, the horrors of the concentration and extermination camps, the repeated military blunders, the sanguinary battles and wholesale slaughter of millions, Hitler's partnership with Mussolini; it's all there. It's all there. Sadly, it's all there. The book ends very shortly after Hitler does in his final pathetic weeks in his bunker. I must give the author credit for not trying to dehumanize Hitler. Hitler was very much a man and not some demonic manifestation plucked from the spirit realm. He was capable of kindness, laughter, love, and other very human attributes. In my opinion it makes his crimes against humanity that much blacker. In the end, Hitler need not have gone through so much trouble trying to destroy the Soviet Union. The events of the 20th century proved that the Soviet Union was more than capable of destroying itself... This was another Audible listen.
